Gr 4–7—Usually a weekend with a relative can be entertaining but uneventful, but this isn't the case for Hector and Mando. The two best friends are spending the weekend with Hector's Uncle Julio, a photographer, in Fresno, California. The two boys accompany him on one of his aerial photograph sessions where he accidentally records an armored car holdup. Uncle Julio reports the incident and the two amigos are featured, with photos, in a local newspaper. The two thieves go after the boys, leading to a slew of silly events as Hector and Mando try to outmaneuver them. Soto's fast-paced, humorous story (Scholastic, 1994) is narrated by Anthony Perez. Spanish words and phrases are sprinkled throughout. An additional purchase.—Katie Llera, Sayreville Middle School, NJ
