Gr 9 Up–After the deaths of Grace’s parents, she finds herself shipped off to an elite Alaskan boarding school where her uncle is the headmaster and where she is rooming with her cousin of the same age. From the outset, however, it’s fairly obvious that this is no ordinary boarding school: Cue the smoking hot, domineering bad boy who has vampire written all over him. Predictably, the school is running amok with paranormal creatures including werewolves, dragons, witches, and warlocks. Further, Grace’s presence is no accident. Some standard vampire rules are in play, but others are conveniently set aside. The one about multiple bites turning a victim into a vampire is whisked away with a fiat about vampire intention. Hokey? Perhaps, but it makes for some steamy, climactic bite scenes. The book runs long, but the pacing is excellent and the dialogue really snaps the story forward.
