PreS-Gr 4—In this inventively formatted cookbook, young chefs explore simple recipes through classic fairy tales with a culinary twist. In each recipe, the ingredients are listed and then the story begins. Interspersed between paragraphs are cooking instructions offset in italics. Instructions are simple and clear, and those involving actions that might require adult assistance are marked with a magic wand graphic. By the end of each entry, if students have followed the directions, they will have a tasty treat. The recipes are divided into five sections ("Stirrings," "Snackings," "Suppings," "Sweetings," and "Sippings") with three or four recipes each. Most of the recipes call for just six or seven ingredients, and some use prepared ingredients such as canned soup or croissant dough from a tube. The stories are accompanied by charming full-color illustrations.
VERDICT An attractive and well-organized work that would make a solid purchase for libraries where cookbooks circulate well.
