Gr 9 Up—This documentary examines universal health care in Cuba, student debt, and the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM). It brings up points that could lead to discussion in history or Spanish classes, such as Hurricane Katrina. Cuba offered to send doctors and students from ELAM to New Orleans to assist those who needed medical attention. Planes were organized, hundreds of students packed for the trip, and seminars were held to consider the city's logistics. Ultimately, President George W. Bush refused the help, which brings to light the past relations between the Cuban and U.S. governments. As student debt becomes more of an issue, this documentary can begin a dialogue about how a relatively poor country such as Cuba can afford universal health care and free education. The film, though, does tend to gloss over Cuba's turbulent history and economic hardships, and it can be a bit one-sided. New information is presented in bold text and refers to the path President Obama has taken toward normalizing diplomatic relations with Cuba. Though this digital resource may at times feel more like an advertisement than a documentary, it can be a solid discussion starter for viewers.
VERDICT This is a worthy additional resource for those looking for material on free education, universal health care, and modern-day Cuba.
