Gr 1–4-Moniz (Rad Dad zine) has put together a simple, free-associative "meditation" on collaboration—a heartfelt call for social activism in an era of social irresponsibility. An attempt is made to illustrate the strength in unity and the interconnectedness of life in all its forms. Unfortunately, the language and imagery is disjointed not only between examples, but also within single observations: "the way clouds make rain/makes mud/makes us laugh/how the rain falls down//and the grass grows up." The stretch readers are invited to make between recognizing that music is a collaboration of "words and…the beat," and that wrestling is a collaboration of two opponents who "bob and weave" (which is a boxing metaphor) strains credulity. In many instances, the Spanish translation reads better than the original English. Dornadic's primarily monotone, slate blue watercolor images range from charming impressionistic chickens to disturbingly amorphous humans, which oddly enough complement Moniz's free verse narrative.
VERDICT An underdeveloped concept, awkward phrasing, and incomplete thoughts leave the impression that this well-intentioned bilingual exploration of a proactive society would be more successfully employed as a pamphlet for parents, youth therapists, and school counselors
