Gr 5–8—Fundamental computer science concepts are examined in this set that uses straightforward, age-appropriate language to make these complex subjects more comprehensible to beginning computer scientists. Commonplace activities and tasks, like making a sandwich or solving a math problem, are used as easy-to-understand examples that clearly illustrate the ideas, while numerous visual aids, including diagrams, charts, and color images, reinforce the text and offer brief respites when needed. Photo captions are often insightful, and "Computer Connection" sidebars add brief facts and trivia that are as informative as they are entertaining. Although the books offer very little in terms of extras, the series is well researched and meets Next Generation Science Standards.
VERDICT A secondary consideration for large computer science collections.
