PreS-Gr 1—Farmer Brown does not like Halloween. In fact, he's frightened by all the spooky sounds and shadows on the wall. So he leaves candy on the porch and locks his door against the frights. But the animals are partying, and that leads to fun for all. Narrator Maurice England's Midwestern twang makes him sound like he'd fit right in with Farmer Brown and the animals. He brings the printed sound effects to life as the animals gather and as one particular animal (Can you say "Quackle"?) takes the candy bowl from the porch. That being said, this needs to be listened to with the book (S. & S., 2013) in hand. Near the end, Farmer Brown reads a note posted on his door, but in the audio version, the note is not read aloud, and this makes the ending confusing and incomplete.
VERDICT A strong narration, but be sure to have the book to share as well. ["Creepy enough for Halloween storyhours, but not enough to scare young listeners": SLJ 6/13 review of the S. & S. book.]
