K-Gr 2—Another chuckle-worthy installment in this charming series for newly independent readers. Claude and Sir Bobblysock decide to visit the countryside and come across Woollybottom Farms, where they meet Mrs. Cowpat. Claude and Sir Bobblysock help Mrs. Cowpat get ready for the county fair. Hilarity ensues as Claude helps the lady cow gather eggs, becomes a sheep dog, rides a horse, and even saves a snotty judge from an angry bull. Filled with illustrations in black and white, with touches of red and pink, this installment is quirky and fun. Smith does an excellent job of keeping the humor lighthearted and appropriate for young audiences. This fourth volume in the series will be enjoyed by fans of the previous books, though it stands alone admirably well.
VERDICT Smith offers another strong entry in this delightfully odd series for picture book readers ready to dip a toe into chapter book waters.
