PreS-K–Yellow-teethed and rude, Cinderelliot’s stepsiblings eyeball his patisserie-level baked goods and scream shrewishly for him to make them goodies to enter into a competition, which he does. Neville and Gertrude, who are pale with dark hair, head off to the palace with his treats, and just as Cinderelliot is about to slip into self-pity, a spectacular-looking man appears, a bit Elton John circa 1970s with wings, and gives our boy the confidence to create the tiered chocolate treat to beat, plus the loan of a limo for delivery. Prince Samuel, a bewildered brown-skinned royal batting interlopers such as Neville and Gertrude away, locks eyes with Cinderelliot, and that’s pretty much it. Yes, there is the slipping on of a lost chef’s toque, and then these two wed and bake happily ever after. It’s a fluffy trifle of a familiar story and readers will see the ending coming a kingdom away.
VERDICT Always room for one more happy ending, and the fairy godfather is truly scrumptious; for all ages.
