Gr 2–4—Newport led an adventurous life as an explorer and pirate, but the excitement doesn't come through in this picture-book biography. Each spread contains one to three short paragraphs and a very large illustration. The text is disjointed as it jumps from explorations in 1587 to 1592 to 1606, but settles as Newport begins his American voyages. The author tries almost too hard to interest readers: "This would be a really big adventure!" The narrative does not flow well, but the short sentences may benefit struggling readers. Illustrations follow the action but are not engaging. No sources are listed. Even though there is very little written about the man, consider this a limited purchase.—Stephanie Farnlacher, Trace Crossings Elementary School, Hoover, AL
