PreS-Gr 2—What is Christmas? It depends on who you ask, but the holiday itself, as indicated by its name, focuses on the birth of the Christ child. This, too, is the principle focus of this adaptation of the book written and illustrated by Gail Gibbons (Holiday House, 2001). In simple, evocative text, the author briefly retells the Christmas story, then goes on to discuss other symbols of the holiday season. Santa Claus, trees, ornaments, crèches, carols, and more are highlighted. This presentation is narrated in warm tones by Qarie Marshall, accompanied by original music with a Christmas flavor. Gibbons's soft, bright watercolor illustrations are scanned and occasionally animate a traditional Northern Hemisphere setting with deep snow, bright evergreens, and warm smiles.
VERDICT This is a nicely done production that gives a quick and loving overview of the holiday.
