PreS-Gr 3—Houston-based kindie rocker Alexander's first CD for children features eight songs, seven of which are original, plus one traditional. Opening with "Hide & Seek" (a playful song about the child's game), Alexander's whispery singing is accompanied by an acoustic guitar and tight harmonies. He then changes musical styles like a chameleon, moving to a funky sound in "Circle" (celebrating many circles in the universe), a bluesy "All the Blues" (about the many shades of blue), a ballad "Letterbox" (about leaving your mark behind), and the classic "Erie Canal." He continues with an uptempo 1960s sound in "Dung Beetle," a country-flavored "Mockingbird," and closes with the ballad "Christmas 'Round the World." The backup musicians provide solid support.
VERDICT Recommend to fans of Dan Zanes or They Might Be Giants.
