K-Gr 1—In the fourth Emily Brown title, the little girl and her toy rabbit, Stanley, encounter a gloomy teddy bear who refuses to be consoled despite trips by imagination to the Outback of Australia, to paint sunflowers in France, and to Yellowstone National Park. When Tearful Teddybear's depression spreads, Emily opens her red umbrella to issue a team of teddy bears to cheer everyone. She convinces Tearful to attempt to smile despite a sewn-shut mouth, and all ends well. Layton's cartoonlike illustrations over photographs juxtapose the tale's reality under fantasy. Tearful's repeated song of loneliness is a trifle long but may allow for audience participation during read-alouds.—Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA
