Toddler-PreS—Little Lion is looking for someone to play with in his savannah home, starting with a grasshopper. The call-and-response dialogue makes this a fun read-aloud with older toddlers and younger preschoolers who will quickly pick up on the rhythm and flow of the simple text. Each page turn reveals a new animal, amphibian, or reptile to identify and then locate as they hide from Little Lion on the next page turn. Texture and pattern are used to great effect along with a tawny color palette that allows von Kitzing to hide animals within an illustration for young readers to find. The tables turn on the precocious cub when he chases after two gray hind legs that turn out to belong to a rather large rhinoceros who shouts out "I'm going to catch YOU!" to a fleeing Little Lion.
VERDICT A palette of sandy hues and a small word count make this a fun title to share in a lapsit program in the library, or as a private viewing at home.
