Gr 1–3—In Ron Roy's spin-off of his popular "A to Z Mystery" series (Random), Jim Meskimen narrates six month-related tales (2009-2010, all Random) sure to immerse young listeners in the adventures as they unfold. Twins Bradley and Brian sleuth out various mysteries with the help of their friends Lucy and Nate. In January Joker, the friends investigate strange lights and aliens. February Friend opens with class preparations for a Valentine's Day party at school. When one of the cards instructs the class to look inside the closet, they find a sick rabbit named Douglas. Bradley and the others are determined to find his owner before it is too late. Costumed statues play a starring role in March Mischief, when the kids track down a leprechaun thief. A search for missing golden eggs ensues in April Adventure, while May Magic features Mother's Day celebrations and hypnotism. The collection concludes with a Father's Day jam-making mystery in June Jam. Some listeners may be distracted by the narrator's continuous repetition of "Brad said," "Brian said," "he said," "Lucy said," etc. Also, the occasional use of music and sound effects would have further dramatized the action. Still, Roy's early chapter books are perfect for reluctant readers and will be enjoyed by the target audience.—Cathie Bashaw Morton, Millbrook Central School District, NY
