Gr 2–3—Cute, fuzzy (except for the python), and native to lands that will be exotic to most American readers, these photogenic denizens of the trees make this series appealing for budding naturalists. Clark supplies competent descriptions of each creature's appearance, diet, distinctive features, habitat, special adaptations to arboreal life, and environmental threats to go with a suite of portraits that catch the animals in what appear to be natural settings. A close-up view of a python chowing down on a frog may disturb more delicate constitutions. Except for koalas, the chosen animals are not frequent subjects of introductions at this level. Indeed, books about flying lemurs and tree kangaroos are downright rare.
