PreS-Gr 1—Boris is a big frog with a boastful attitude. After alienating all his frog friends with his boasting, he proceeds to alienate a grasshopper, a lizard, and a kingfisher with his superior hopping, fly-catching, and fishing abilities. When Boris comes across a toad, however, he meets his match. Toad "[puffs] up until he [is] as fat and round as a football," and despite warnings from Toad that frogs don't have the same ability, Boris will not be outdone. As he tries to puff himself up, his face goes from pink to red to purple. Indeed, with a page turn, there is a loud pop and "Boris was no more." The explosive end will surprise—and possibly horrify—some readers. Colorful cartoon-style illustrations and varied typography support and extend the story.
VERDICT The abrupt and unsavory ending may put off readers, but for those who are not squeamish, this cautionary tale may fit the bill.
