PreS-Gr 1—Boris the basset hound likes to stay inside and observe other dogs around him. He doesn't appear to partake in any of the games of chase at the local park, opting rather to relax on his mat, with his reading glasses and newspaper. He doesn't pay attention to the other canines until a poodle named Polly challenges him to a game of chase. She calls him lazy, and he admits that he does exercise, and his healthy exercise routine is revealed on the following pages. The next day, Boris walks to the park wearing a backward baseball hat and red bandana around his neck. Polly teases him again, but this time he plays chase and beats her at her own game. This not-so-engaging tale may appeal to diehard dog fans, but the plot is dry. The art is brightly colored and funny, but there are livelier stories about dogs, friendships, and even fitness for the youngest readers.—Melissa Smith, Royal Oak Public Library, MI
