Gr 4–7—A look at 50 prominent African American political leaders. The book goes as far back as 1836, with Alexander Lucius Twilight, the first African American elected to a state legislature, who served in Vermont. Other outstanding leaders include U.S. Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., but notably missing is Loretta Lynch, U.S. attorney general from 2015 to 2017. Each entry contains a photo and a one-page summary of the subject's accomplishments in office as well as a short biography. Many profiles feature inspirational quotes and childhood lessons that led the individuals toward a life dedicated to public service. The static layout and use of black-and-white photos make this more of a purposeful addition to biography collections than an engaging read.
VERDICT A slim but suitable reference for students in need of report subject ideas or a bit of inspiration.
