Toddler-PreS–Bluey, the anthropomorphic Blue Heeler puppy of the popular eponymous TV series; her sister, Bingo; and many friends wear non-scary Halloween costumes in this book. Readers will see spider, vampire, ghost, Frankenstein, ballerina, wizard, Dracula, monster, witch, and pumpkin costumes. Although, the monster and Frankenstein outfits are the same: just different colored face masks and overcoats. The same is true for Dracula and the vampire—it’s the same costume, just a different color scheme. Each page is divided in half, creating a mix-and-match opportunity for the different characters and their costumes. This feature may be good for little hands that want to turn pages themselves to work to develop fine motor skills. Text is limited to one word per page, and there is no scenery behind the costumed characters, just a slight shadow and a vibrant solid color background. This cute title doesn’t cover new ground, but it will circulate because of Bluey’s popularity among parents and children.
VERDICT Not an essential purchase.
