PreS-Gr 2—Daisy spies a gorgeous yellow kite flying overhead on a windy day. She follows it and finds its young owner, William, who hands her the spool and patiently teaches her how to steer and control it. Daisy is enchanted and starts running with the kite and, in a shocking move, sprints home, where she keeps it safely in her room. She places it on top of her dresser and looks at it every day but eventually can't resist the lure and ventures out to fly it again. William watches her. They do not speak, and Daisy retreats to her room, where she spends a sleepless night. The following morning, she runs to William's gate and writes "sorry" in the sand, leaving behind the beloved kite. The story culminates in the two children meeting and William showing Daisy how to make her own red kite; then they fly their brilliantly colored kites together. The illustrations are utterly evocative, and one can almost feel the wind blowing while looking at these beautiful drawings.
VERDICT An endearing tale that is sure to captivate. Kids will definitely want to talk about this one and will be full of questions about Daisy's actions and how both children reacted.
