PreS-Gr 1–When a black cat misses his bus, he sits next to a yellow bunny on a park bench. They exchange pleasantries, then quietly sit together doing their own thing. When the bunny’s yarn begins to roll away, cat kindly retrieves it. Over the next few days they continue to sit together (sharing water and an umbrella). They think about the other at the end of the day, even going to extreme lengths to save the bench seat after the black cat’s one terribly disappointing encounter having to sit next to a dog. Readers can see friendship grow and grow in this nearly wordless story. This simple story about friendship, with Jung’s slightly oddball illustrations (children will get a kick out of the crowd scene with a variety of animals), is great for one-on-one sharing.
VERDICT An additional purchase for most libraries.
