Gr 2—4—Anna Sewell's Black Beauty is a classic horse story dear to many hearts. In this simplified version by Lisa Church (Sterling, 2005), the basics of the story remain, but the retelling is rather bland and episodic. The female narrator reads the story, altering her voice for the different characters and providing a nicely-paced, clear presentation. While not particularly exciting or poignant, this will provide young students with an introduction to the classic and an opportunity to read along with the book. Hopefully, this will pique their interest so that they will go on the read the original when they are older.—Teresa Bateman. Brigadoon Elementary School, Federal Way, WA
