King bought her own racket with the nine dollars she earned from neighbors, having been told by her father that she had to find a way to get one if she really wanted to play. This was only the beginning of King's willingness to fight for what she knew was right throughout her life. She went on to rally for equality in women's sports and for the LGBT community. King draws the viewers in with her matter-of-fact style and responsiveness. After putting together an all-women's tennis tour called the Original 9, she gained sponsorship for what became the Virginia Slims tournament. She is known not only for her passion for equal rights but for her match against Bobby Riggs in 1973. At the famous match's climax, viewers will be cheering for King as the editing weaves the black-and-white clips together to increase the drama.
