Gr 3–8—Set in the French Alps during World War II, this movie is based on the 1965 French novel of the same name. It chronicles one boy's journey to redeem a dog and help his village. Sebastian, six, befriends an enormous stray sheepdog who he names Belle, even though the townspeople think that the dog is responsible for the rash of livestock killings. Belle proves her worth 10 times over when she saves Sebastian from harm and helps lead a group of Jewish refugees to safety in Switzerland. Sebastian meets each challenge with gentle conviction, and he faces some ugly truths about life but does so with dignity and compassion. Backstories involving his guardian's heavy drinking and a tentative romance between his guardian's niece and the local doctor add dimension to the Sebastian and Belle story line without detracting from it. Additionally, the Alpine setting is a source of wonder and delight. The close-ups of the rugged, perilous terrain hint at the danger of trekking across the mountains. Sparkling creeks, banks of wildflowers, and stone cottages are set in contrast to the arrival of Nazis in their black cars and dark uniforms. Panoramic views connote the village's remoteness and beauty, while an avalanche demonstrates Mother Nature's awesome power. Felix Bossuet is ideally suited to the role of Sebastian. His performance is a compelling mix of vulnerability and innocence, and strength and wisdom.
