K-Gr 2—George is a gigantic grizzly bear who feels dissatisfied with life. His fellow bears are content to lie about chatting and fishing, but he longs for something more. When he stumbles upon a book left in the woods, George realizes that he must learn to read. He decides to find the owner of this book and persuade the person to teach him. George ventures into town causing much mayhem and panic and wanders into the elementary school. Soon, he is surrounded by a cadre of armed and very nervous police officers. Luckily Clementine, the plucky and outspoken owner of the book, comes to the rescue and volunteers to teach George to read (she is just learning herself), and peace is restored. Clark's charming, straightforward tale is filled with colorful, detailed illustrations. George's huge body and sharp claws are somehow made endearing, as are his soulful expressions. Children will be engaged by the terror this gentle giant causes, and Clementine's take-charge attitude is certainly one to emulate.
VERDICT A delightful tale that cleverly demonstrates the joy of reading
