PreS-Gr 3–Bear is quite content with his comfortable life in his favorite chair accompanied by the scent of strawberry pie. But when the wind changes, suddenly his comfortable life doesn’t seem like the place he is meant to be. Bear sets off in search of change. He doesn’t know where he is going, but he is certain he must get there, and he makes numerous friends along the way. Boasting soft and inviting watercolor illustrations, this is a whimsical story that touches on the topic of an “inner voice” or feeling, and encourages readers to believe the power and beauty that can be found in change. The dynamic telling moves the story forward as Bear sets out on his journey, and scene after scene is deliberately paced to delight and surprise. With text and illustrations that seem to bounce off the page, this book would lend itself well to story hours.
VERDICT An endearing picture book that encourages children to trust their instincts and keep moving ahead, this book is a worthwhile purchase for most collections.
