K-Gr 2–Monster wrestler Rayburn Junior is getting ready for the fight of his life. Even though his dad, Rayburn Senior, was a famous wrestler for the town of Stoker, Rayburn Junior never thought he could be as strong as his dad. For a while, he didn’t even try. But when he learns that the monster Tentacular plans to destroy his dad’s stadium, he teams up with an old friend to stop it from happening. For Rayburn, this not only means getting back into the ring, but also being honest with himself about one of his true passions: dance. He will need every dance move and trick he knows to beat the mighty Tentacular and to save his dad’s legacy. Using a balance of short, declarative sentences, as well as shorter compound and complex sentences, this title will build confidence for newly independent readers. A mix of sight words and more advanced vocabulary will provide just enough challenge for young readers. Supportive illustrations fill the entire spread and will remind readers of their favorite comic book or superhero story. On the last page, Rayburn and Tentacular are face-to-face, ready for battle. Young readers will be begging for a second installment, just to find out what happens.
VERDICT This simple but engaging story is a great fit for any collection where wrestling, superheroes, or the movie Rumble are popular.
