Gr 8 Up—A broad and comprehensive overview of the past, present, and future of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A number of different facets of ASD, including its history and neurological background, as well as the needs of those with ASD, are presented. The book successfully puts a face to this disorder in a way that will humanize it to teenage readers. Tabone begins by telling a personal story about two individuals he knew growing up who he later realized had ASD. The real-life stories of people with ASD and their family members are particularly effective at providing perspective on this issue, especially when these are told in their own words. The successes of famous individuals with this disorder, such as Temple Grandin and Daniel Tammet, are also highlighted. A number of additions to the text, including checklists, graphs, charts, and further clarification of concepts that may be unfamiliar to teens (such as MRIs and Tourette's syndrome), enhance the content. A list of resources, including websites, books, and movies for teens, is appended, but it isn't very extensive. ASD is an issue that will only continue to grow in importance as more and more people are diagnosed; this volume will provide secondary students with a greater understanding of and compassion toward those affected.
VERDICT A useful research tool and an essential resource for secondary school libraries.
