Gr 7–10—Although Australia is the world's smallest continent, it offers many landmarks and points of interest. Grant highlights more than 65 sites that make this country so remarkable. Divided by region, the listings include cities, buildings, beaches, mountains, and other scenic locations. In some cases, the offerings are not major surprises. The cities of Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, as well as the capital, Canberra, are covered, as are the Sydney Opera House, the Great Barrier Reef, the Royal Exhibition Hall, and the National Museum of Australia. There are also several selections that vividly illustrate the rich and diverse geography of Australia, such as the Gold Coast, Devils Marbles, and Kangaroo Island. There is an abundance of beautiful photography, particularly the spread at the end of each section. Oddly, however, there are no maps. Most entries are two pages or less, with ample subheadings and short overviews. Information is clearly presented, and the author does a commendable job of incorporating history and culture in her descriptions of various sites.
VERDICT A wonderful book for browsers and a strong resource for report writers.
