Australian Sea Life

Little Hare. Nov. 2020. 36p. Tr $22.99. ISBN 9781760504694.
K-Gr 2–Chun’s illustrations showcase 16 Australian animals, spotlighting the immense biodiversity in the waters of the country’s coasts. Many of the animals are familiar, such as the great white shark, bottlenose dolphin, and green sea turtle. Chun also portrays unique and unusual creatures, such as the dugong, the nudibranch, and the weedy sea dragon. Several paragraphs describe the animal’s habitat range and location, diet, and other fascinating facts. For example, a fanfin anglerfish male latches onto the female until their skin fuses together. The male and female fish will eventually share the same bloodstream. A bluebottle is actually made up of four organisms called zooids. One zooid can’t live alone, so it combines with other zooids. Each zooid performs a specific purpose to ensure the survival of the group. The information is educational but will not overwhelm readers. What stands out are Chun’s beautiful illustrations. The artwork depicts movement, detail, and texture.
VERDICT Chun’s vivid illustrations are the star in this animal nonfiction title. Readers will enjoy learning about the less familiar animals and confirming facts about perennial favorites.
