PreS–A boy who wants to be a tiger gets his wish, only to find it’s not everything he thought it would be. August scarfs food, marks his territory (peeing—which is sure to delight preschoolers), and moves like a tiger. When his mom puts him outside, he growls and turns into a tiger. All is well until he finds his friends who are terrified of him. His mother accepts his new form and August becomes, once again, a boy. The illustrations use a variety of mediums including watercolor and colored pencil that reflect the whimsy of the playful story. The storyline, about a child who becomes a wild animal only to have buyer’s remorse, has been done before to greater effect, with more consistency.
VERDICT Strictly optional purchase for large collections.
