Gr 6 Up—This short film, in French with English subtitles, follows a beach outing by members of the Association des Grands Brûlés, an organization for burn survivors and their families in Quebec, Canada. Participants endure stares of curious onlookers as they strip to their bathing suits to enjoy a beautiful day at the lake. As they get used to the looks, they become more accepting of themselves. One woman talks about people staring and says, "If they don't like it, they can look away." The lesson for those with scars or who have body image issues is to embrace differences and accept their bodies as they are. The film includes almost exclusively adults. Some drink wine in one scene.
VERDICT Perhaps useful in classes or collections with self-esteem or diversity focuses.
