Gr 2–4—Each title features seven species profiles, grouped either by geologic age or by environment. The clear, consistent design makes the information easy to follow. Each spread opens with a few sentences of brief facts, supplemented by an inset "Fact File" and a "Mini Facts" box. Also included are a range map, a large captioned drawing of the animal, and a size scale, though the depicted scale is inaccurate in some cases. Phonetic pronunciation, geologic era, and date of the first fossil find round out the presentation. A short quiz provides the "detective" element from the series title. Some might consider the inclusion of nondinosaurs in a series called "Dinosaur Detectives" misleading, but it's always apparent which creatures aren't dinosaurs.
VERDICT Featuring an orderly visual presentation and material that's intriguing but not overwhelming, this set is a good fit for younger dinosaur fans.
