PreS-K–Angelina Ballerina is looking forward to sharing her new dance move, the Magical Fairy Twirl, on the first day of the school year at Miss Lilly’s Ballet School. However, Angelina’s display doesn’t go as planned, and what was supposed to be “the best day ever” turns into “an absolute disaster.” Angelina trudges home, where her father provides a listening ear and advice. She returns to the second day of ballet school ready to make amends and try again. McPhillips’s illustrations closely follow the style of Craig’s originals; bright beams of sunlight filter down through large windows, and the reflections in the dance school mirrors add visual interest. All of the characters are mice with gray, white, or brown fur. Angelina’s dance classmates are mostly other girls in pastel leotards with matching tutus and pointe shoes; two boys in the class wear shirts and shorts.
VERDICT Children will relate to Angelina’s experience of excitement, disappointment, and recovery, but there’s nothing groundbreaking here; purchase where “Angelina Ballerina” books are popular.
