Slowly he learns how to make his pictures look real, until the subjects begin to leap off the page. When the president asks the boy to help the world, he draws images of trucks loaded with food for the world's hungry people, as well as pictures of schools and hospitals. Then, with the very last bit of crayon, he draws something for himself: a puppy. McPhail's endearing ink and watercolor illustrations and brief text create a small, cozy book for one-on-one sharing. After Andrew learns to draw with a special crayon, his pictures start coming to life. He makes gifts for his family, and before long, he's creating truckloads of food for the hungry and supplies for flood victims. In the satisfying ending, Andrew draws something for himself with the crayon's last stub: a dog. Quietly humorous illustrations complement the thoughtful story's matter-of-fact prose.
