PreS-Gr 1—This minimalistic, fanciful tale is a tone poem on what a brother and sister might do on a rainy day armed with imagination and a pair of oversize red galoshes. They use the boots as kites, anchors while flying with an umbrella, oars while sailing in a bathtub, and as shoes for Grandma. Text is placed on the pages in swoops and giddy swirls, perfectly echoing the curves and lines of the illustrations. Landscapes are very simply drawn, as are trees. People and animals are most realistic, although often shown from unusual perspectives. This is a book to linger over in order to appreciate the craft and whimsy involved. A great bedtime story, sure to spark imaginative dreams, this appealing artistic collaboration begs for repeated readings.—B. Allison Gray, Goleta Public Library, CA
