Gr 2–5—Addressed to readers who dream of being horse owners, these volumes cover physical attributes, characteristics, history, and care of different breeds. In each book, a central spread features a photo of a horse with various body parts labeled, although no definitions are provided in the text or glossary. The clean design with text boxes, photos, and other images will draw browsers, and the conversational narratives will encourage reluctant readers. Though information about each breed changes by volume, the chapters devoted to horse care, boarding options, and horse-related activities vary little. True horse fans will want to seek more information elsewhere, but these books provide an attractive starting point.
Although brightly colored with plentiful photographs and an upbeat voice, these horse books are repetitious, with at least one third of the text copied nearly verbatim in each book. A description of each breed, its history, and generic horse-care advice fill each volume, with unclear parts-of-the-body diagrams and corny suggestions for how to enjoy horses without owning one. Bib., glos., ind. Review covers these My Favorite Horses titles: American Quarter Horses Are My Favorite!, Appaloosas Are My Favorite!, Arabians Are My Favorite!, Lipizzans Are My Favorite!, Morgan Horses Are My Favorite!, and Shetland Ponies Are My Favorite!.
