Gr 1–3—A friendly, fact-filled narrative with large, colorful, and labeled illustrations introduces a variety of animal homes—rocky caves, burrows and tunnels, spider webs, bee hives, termite homes, protective shells, nests, beaver lodges, and more. The author takes time to connect readers to the content: "Like you, animals need a place to call home where they can be safe and be a family." The colorful spreads show families observing various creatures in and around their homes. The images and text work well together. Packham ends with an invitation for readers to continue the journey on their own: "Now that you've learned about so many unusual and interesting animal homes, perhaps you can try to find some when you are out and about near you own house." Back matter provides even more information about each of the critters.
VERDICT Highly recommended for animal studies, browsers, and independent readers. An informative, well-designed book.
