Gr 6-10–In a graphic novel collection of three individual and original stories, originally published as
Around the Spider-Verse, teen iterations of the Spider-Man from different alternate universes fight against crime and supervillains while also battling regular teen issues, such as grieving the death of parent, boring school trips, and friendship woes. Anya Corazon (Araña), who is Latina, struggles to connect with her father, who is still reeling from her mother’s death while he tries to uncover a supervillain auction led by the Kraven Hunter. Araña’s tale also touches upon the femicides that have plagued the U.S.-Mexico border for decades, anchoring it in reality. Miles Morales (Spider-Man), who is Afro Latino, visits the Museum of Natural History, where Mysterio steals a mysterious tablet that brings the exhibits back to life. Gwen Stacy (Ghost-Spider), who is white, fights off an obsessed fan turned villain called the Jackal, who aims to destroy Gwen’s feminist punk band. Every entry features the action and humor that fans of the Spider-verse have come to expect; it will also ring true with newcomers. Each story, though only a few pages long, has a complete narrative arc and well-crafted characterization. The art is dynamic and fresh, with jewel tones and fluid action across the panels. The Spanish translation feels seamless and adds to the authenticity of the representation.
VERDICT Purchase this entertaining, culturally rich comics anthology for all Spanish-language graphic novel collections.
