Gr 7 Up—In this fantastical tale taking place in 1962, we meet the Soria family in Bicho Raro, CO. Pilgrims from all over travel to visit this Mexican American family in the hopes for a miracle. The Sorias have been granting miracles for a long time, but holding fast to rules about not getting involved with the pilgrims. Daniel, the Saint of Bicho Raro, breaks this very rule when helping a pilgrim he has fallen in love with. His cousins, Joaquin and Beatriz, dabble in pirate radio and hope their broadcasts will help bring Daniel home and aid in curing the many pilgrims still with them. Thom Rivera's narration is lovely, and he fits into the "voices" of the characters well. The story is rich in description, and characters are drawn out nicely.
VERDICT This title will appeal to listeners who enjoy magical realism or general fans of Stiefvater.
