Gr 9 Up—Adults, particularly Texans, may have at least a passing familiarity with Ann Richards, but this affable documentary could introduce teenage viewers to this firecracker of Texas politics, who passed away in 2000. It uses archival footage, family photos, and campaign coverage to showcase her talent and abundant humor in scripted speeches and off-the-cuff remarks. Her early adult life as a teacher and mother are touched on, but the film primarily focuses on her political campaigns and the changes she made as Travis County commissioner, Texas state treasurer, and governor (1991–1995.) Her alcoholism is openly discussed, as is her rebuttal to the accusation of cocaine use. Her son, daughter, and former husband are interviewed, along with campaign workers and political colleagues, both major (Bill Clinton) and not as well known. The film is 100 percent in her corner, and makes no claim of being evenhanded. Richards's easy humor and obvious zest for politics will keep most students engaged. Viewers will come away with a greater understanding of a woman who left her mark on the "good ol' boy" world of politics in her state and nationwide.—
