Gr 9 Up—Villegas, assistant professor of political science at California State University at San Bernardino, has carefully selected 40 articles, letters, or reports pertaining to or written by Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. Subdivided into 10 sections, these documents, dating from 1769, when Hamilton was 12, until 1804, the year of his fatal duel, provide insight into his life and times. Equally valuable are Villegas's analytical comments on highlighted passages within each document, including a short introduction and concluding statement for each. Many of the documents are five pages or less, while only a few are over 10 pages. This excellent resource also features a comprehensive introduction to Hamilton, a detailed time line, and a selected reading list (although several titles listed here are geared more for a collegiate audience).
VERDICT Recommended for most nonfiction high school collections for its support of Common Core State Standards for critical reading of historic documents. Jeanette Lambert, formerly at Nashville-Davidson County Schools, TN
