Gr 3–5—Time line synopses of topics begin with single-page introductions, followed by eight sections that cover a historical era, with significantly more attention to the ancient world and early developments than the recent past and present. Some events are simply noted; others merit an explanatory paragraph or two per page, paired with a small illustration, such as period art, portraits, or photos of artifacts and technology. Browsers may leaf through these books and learn a fact or two, but they won't find enough information to satisfy their curiosity or write reports.
VERDICT Supplemental introductions for large collections.
