Sill’s artwork enhances the text; in one scene a great shearwater soars over the open ocean; in another, a ring-billed gull is depicted on a lake in an urban environment. Readers learn about habitat, feeding methods, and physical features. The detailed illustrations are engaging and informative. Thumbnail sketches at the back of the book expand upon each bird with a thorough paragraph. A brief glossary defines terms that might be unfamiliar to young readers, such as hover, pollution, and prey. Further reading is listed.
VERDICT This serviceable guide to seabirds contains straightforward language and colorful illustrations. Recommended for most public and school libraries.
