PreS-K—From the padded cover with its rickracklike binding and large, block polka-dot letters to the whimsical display of pudgy critters, this appealing alphabet book will attract children. Every page includes two small, sturdy flaps, each labeled with a capital letter. Next to the flap, a sweetly rounded animal faces readers. As a flap is lifted, the name of the animal is revealed along with the featured letter in lowercase. Most of the animals are readily recognizable with the possible exception of the "Quail," "Upland Gorilla," and "X-ray Fish." An attractive combination of colors, many of which are pastel hues, is pleasing to the eye, and the book's simplicity renders it both charming and useful.—Maryann H. Owen, Racine Public Library, WI
