PreS-Gr 1—With a kaleidoscope of colors providing vibrant backgrounds for realistic photos of insects, this board book will visually appeal to two-to-five-year-olds, who will easily be able to develop their understanding of the alphabet while inspecting the 26 featured specimens (which include the owfly, potter wasp, cicada, and firefly). However, the attractive images are paired with purely factual text that will go over the heads of the targeted age group ("Dragonflies have two pairs of wings that allow them to fly in many directions and hover in the air—just like a helicopter!"). Jerry Pallotta's
The Icky Bug Alphabet Book (Charlesbridge, 1986) is similarly formatted, with just a tad more flow and context to engage young readers as they learn about the fascinating class insecta. One to miss.—
