Gr 3–6—Irwin presents colorful photographs and enthusiastic commentary chronicling her experiences throughout a year, beginning with a July Hollywood-themed birthday party at the famous Australia Zoo. The 12-year-old is the daughter of the late Steve Irwin, animal conservationist and wildlife expert, and lives at the zoo with her mother and brother and an amazing number of animals. Monthly entries describe her travels throughout Australia, Tasmania, and the United States as well as the "Patient of the Month" progress of animals being treated at the zoo's hospital. The wounded creatures found by the road and in backyards are treated and returned to the wild whenever possible. There are also monthly descriptions accompanied by photos of the animals that live at the zoo permanently and are loved by the many visitors. The most exciting entries are descriptions of Irwin's many adventures, which include researching crocodiles, befriending an echidna, hugging an emu, and petting a komodo dragon. Readers will be thrilled by Irwin's escapades, inspired by her enthusiasm, and gain a new appreciation for Australian wildlife. Large and small photos throughout the book are appealing and colorful. It's unfortunate that there is no map to show the areas traveled by the author and her mother and brother.—Jackie Gropman, formerly at Fairfax County Public Library System, Fairfax, VA
