Gr 9 Up—This compact introduction to modern art covers 52 different figures, chosen for their "profound and lasting impact on the world." The entries are arranged alphabetically, with at least one artist for each letter. Accompanied by graphic-style portraits that simplify each artists' technique into its core stylistic elements, each profile includes a brief biography, reproductions of famous works, and "Where to See [Artist's] Work" and "Did You Know?" sidebars. Interestingly, Tuohy, who created all these portraits, is considered the book's author (he selected all the individuals and penned the preface). However, art historian Masters's encyclopedic articles are just as relevant as the images. He provides fascinating and thorough details, for instance, walking readers through the many artistic movements to which Piet Mondrian contributed. There are also mentions of the artists' personal lives, such as Jackson Pollock's alcoholism and Yayoi Kusama's "orgy parties."
VERDICT A useful, portable guide.
