Gr 3–5-A terrified seal comes face-to-face with his natural predator, a polar bear, expecting to meet his demise. To his disbelief, the polar bear doesn't eat him—instead, he confesses his love. Seal's fear of Polar Bear keeps him from committing, but an unlikely love story slowly blossoms. A few supporting characters, such as an aging whale, other polar bears, and a bully seagull, help push the two closer together. This odd couple story is charming and sweet, with inner monologues and asides that result in laugh-out-loud moments. Though the art is minimalist, the characters are expressive.
